[GRRiders] Looking for info to help make GRR less painful

Hi Denny, I've felt your pain!!! I've been through the same thing as you many a time.

I finally found a setup that worked for me on PBP. I had no chaffing, saddle sores, or numbness after over three days on the bike, and the bike was a fixed/single speed bike, so I was on the saddle much more than my previous long rides.

I rode with an older Brooks B17 Narrow. Probably from the '70's, so it was well broken in. I used a fair about of Bag Balm before the start and would re-apply once or twice a day.
Finally, I brought a packet of Baby Wipes that I would use each time after doing my business... That all helped a lot.

But the one thing that I think help me the most was the following. Every 4 to 6 hours I would take two new Baby Wipes and lay them neatly in my shorts on the Chamois, then carefully pull the shorts up without disturbing the Baby Wipes. The wipes would rest between my skin and my shorts. It felt like I had a nice cool Air Conditioner shooting up through my saddle. This nice cool effect would last from controle to controle. Even if they bunched up a bit they still kept me cool and prevented any chaffing. I arrived back in Paris as if I had just ridden to the coffee shop. I was quite amazed(and relieved) after the ride. Absolutely no problems or pain.

I can't say it will work for you, but I'm going to try it again on this years GRR.

It was good to see you this weekend, and I hope we can do some miles together on the SR600 in a few weeks.

See ya,

Mark

I have been doing Brevets since 1994, and have completed two PBP rides, but have not been unable to solve getting very chafed on long rides. I had to drop out of the first GRR a little beyond Susanville, do to this problem. I use Power Glide, and Paceline Chamois Butt'r, and wear two pair of shorts. Also I ride a Terry fly saddle. Does anyone have an idea that has worked for you or someone else you know of.
Thanks
