Hi Michele and GRR organizers:
I am sure some audience and friends were puzzled on my action so I want
to clarify
my action. My decision to stop with 1.3 mile to go had nothing to do
with Keith,
GRR volunteers or organizers.
I believe randonneuring events are supposed to be non-competitive rides
and are not races
but records are still kept in most 1200 km rides. I am personally
against keeping course
record for randonneuring rides. To make this point, I prefer my name to
be kept out of
the GRR record. I will not react this way if the event is an ultra
race. I met my objective of
staying awake for over 60 hrs and my official finish time/placing did
not matter much to me.
This was the same message that I gave to Dan Shadoan when he called to
remind me to
sign-in at the motel on Thursday's afternoon.
To repeat Keith Fraser's last reply to me when I took the detour, I am
very unusual.
This is just my personal opinion as I am not asking the organizers to
remove all
randonneuring events' record. I felt removing the record will make the
event slightly
less competitive and promote more camaraderie among competition. From
the
randonneuring rides in the previous years, I have seen too many DNFs
from riders
who just wanted to break/set the course record.
Regards,
Michael Lau

Hello Michele,
We wish we knew too. Ken Bonner, the 4th place finisher, is at
the same motel and said he'd tell Michael to ride over to the finish and
sign in soon.

Could you shed some light for your non-competing
audience on WHY Michael Lau
would not have wanted his completion time recorded along
with Keith Fraser?
My family has come up with several scenarios...but only
one seems reasonable.
Keith "needed" the win as some kind of qualifyer
for future races?
Though, I am certain there is little reason left after
60 hours on a bike...
Thanks again, for your fine work.
Michele Guttenberg
