GRR Update #6

Wednesday Afternoon in the 46th hour of the GRR

The Tobin control is open and ready for action! The two frontrunners,
Michael Lau and Keith Fraser, arrived at the Tobin control (mile 618.6,
or 995.5 km) at 3:42 p.m. tired, hungry, and a little hot. The
afternoon winds have kicked up in the canyon and the two Canadians had
to fight a warm headwind going downhill (ugh!). However, with only
200km left to go, they were ready to press on to Davis after a 45 minute
stop. Ken Bonner is currently in third place roughly 3 hours back.
Jerry Khorll is the fourth randonneur back, about 2 hours behind Ken.

The thunderstorms are back! The randonneurs endured some hit-and-miss
rain and hail yesterday. And today is no different. While the Adin
control only got a brief downpour today, the Susanville control 70 miles
to the south was getting hammered with numerous downpours. Locals in
the area said they have not seen rain like this in months! With the
bulk of the riders currently at the Adin control or beyond towards
Susanville, some are getting wet. However, the temperatures have been
quite mild for the riders this afternoon.

Stig Lundgaard from Denmark is still sticking with the Scott
English/Susan Cooper tandem. Word has it they are at Susanville taking
a short sleep break. As of this writing, approximately 11 randonneurs
have arrived or passed through the Susanville control (at mile 512, or
824 km). Back at the Alturas control, it has been reported that all
riders have passed through and they are closing down. Between the
Alturas and Adin controls, there are only 4 riders (Mitch Ashley, Ken
Dobb, Martin Heath, John Robbins) left bringing up the rear. However,
the Adin control does not close until 10:34 tonight so they are all in
good shape.

Word has it that 14 randonneurs are currently at Adin and enjoying a
wonderful meal provided by Mike Tigges, Susan Jacobson, and the local
Adin ambulance crew. The skies in Adin are clear with no more rain
expected today.
