GRR Update #4
We are now into the 29th hour of the Gold Rush Randonnée. The current leaders, Michael Lau and Keith Fraser, just arrived at the Adin control (at mile 444.5, or 715 km) on their way back to Davis. The next two riders, Wayne Woodside and Reid Walden, are about 2 hours back. The cyclists that prefer a more relaxed Audax style of riding, and are at the tail-end of the GRR, have just left Susanville on their way out to Adin. The Susanville control is now closed for outbound riders, but should be expecting their first inbound riders in roughly 4 hours.
The Adin control (at mile 316, or 509 km) in this 29th hour is a happening place! About 30% of the riders are now at the Adin control on their outbound journey, 13 are taking a sleep break, 8 are walking around and eating, and 5 are in the showers. There are reports of Hawiian music wafting through the control; apparently provided by the control workers to signify the Oasis-like quality of this stop.
Lots of exciting things have been happening this afternoon on the east side of the Sierra Crest...in the form of thunderstorms and hail! While the thunderstorm activity is fairly local and short-lived, it can be quite intense if you're in the middle of one. Unfortunately, some of the later riders got caught in a thunderstorm at the top of Janesville grade and decided to quit. Most of the other riders got some form of precipitation between the Susanville control and the Adin control. However, it has been reported that once the storms pass, the countryside is quite stunning in its beauty!
The three mixed tandems that started the GRR are still riding strong. The Scott English/Susan Cooper and Peter Dusel/Cynthia Van der Wiele tandems had left the Adin control on their way to Alturas 1-2 hours ago. The Dan Crain/Anny Beck tandem are sleeping at Adin.
Next update will be tomorrow morning at about the 36th hour of the GRR!
