OK, so you think you have what it takes to be the last finisher. Perhaps there are more experienced riders than I to take the crown.
If there be a contest, let's set some rules.

1) There will be no arriving to a checkpoint after posted time or you are disqualified.
2) No accidents or injuries, Please! Some people will try anything to come in last.
3) No adjustments to the bicycle to slow your speed. For example, riding with the brakes on, using deflated tires, removal of the seat...
4) You will have a good atittude. You will be penalized minutes for any complaining.
5) No sleeping in your hotel prior to checking in at the finish. Unless you plan on riding RAAM.
6) No pushing.
7) And if you do not win, you will not have a hissy fit.

I apologize. There is no competeing in Randonneuring.

Seriously, I wish everyone a great ride. I know personally that the Davis Bike Club does a super job on the events they put on.
On their '99 1000 Km Brevet, I was not feeling well due to the heat. I was the last rider and on the first climb, I was thinking I would not be able to finish this ride. A volunteer (I apologize as I can't recall her name) drove by and gave me cold water. In the cooler evening, I felt a lot better. At the checkpoint after the Grapevine climb, another volunteer replaced my broken spokes. And later when I was snapping spokes, someone came out and brought me a new wheel. Mr. Dodge fixed my flat around midnight. And I was lucky to ride with DBC members, the Woodsides and at that time, the President, Mr Barcellos. They helped this cool weather rider survive the triple digit temperature. I have experienced the great support the Davis Bike Club is famous for.

If you are like me and you find it hard to relax prior to the start, please join me Tuesday morning at 10 AM at the Caffe Italia. (I'm hoping this is a good choice. Suppose to have a good breakfast) I'll be wearing a red Davis Double t-shirt.

As for the all you can eat Banquet, that definitely will make me ride faster. That may make me lose the contest.

Happy safe bicycling, David
