Hi All!
Pete Dusel here, an ancien of assorted events, including the
2001 GRR that I rode tandem with Cyndy Van der Wiele. It was our third
ride together that year, a training plan I don't recommend!
I'm also a pack rat, and still have all the e-mails from Joe
Goldrush from 2001, including his news releases from during the ride.
I'll be starting to post the 2001 Gold Rush News E-mails
starting next Tuesday, May 3. I'll be sending them out roughly "Real
Time" so you can get an idea how fast/slow things happen during the
event.
Don't forget that the riders check in times from 2001 are on the
web at:
http://davisbikeclub.org/goldrush/riderprogress/riderstats.htm
Looking at the profile, the time splits above, and the climb
splits below, may help you with your planning, and understanding why,
for example, our average speed dropped from 17.67 between Davis and
Oroville, to 11.45 between Oroville and Tobin!
Don't forget that because these are based on check in times,
they include the time spent stopped at the previous control. For info,
we spent about 30 minutes in Oroville.
For info, here's the climb splits (in feet) I recorded from an
Avocet Vertech in 2001, some people may find this info helpful for
planning their event:
Davis 0
Oroville 140*
Tobin 2,160*
Greenville 6,000
Susanville 8,460*
Adin 16,550
Alturas 18,560
Davis Creek 19,020
Alturas 19,160
Adin 19,880*
Susanville 23,910
Greenville 27,560
Tobin 27,980
Oroville 29,110
Davis 29,500
The *ed items are where I forgot to record the split from the
Vertech, and the numbers are swagged from a Polar xTrainer + with
altimeter. Things can get VERY busy at a control!
If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask!
You never know, the answer may be worth far more than it cost!
Pete
