[GRRiders] Time limits/location for 1000k finish on GRR

Very good question, Rob. This was the topic of much discussion back in 2001 during planning of the first GRR.

Tobin is the finish of the 1000k portion of the 1000k+200k option. Tobin was actually 3 miles short of a 1000k, but since nearly every rider rode on to complete the 200k portion (actually about 205 km) as well, no one was made to ride around in circles until a full 1000k was completed before starting the 200k portion. We had one rider only complete the 1000k, then waited for a relative to come pick him up at Tobin. I don't recall what we did, but I think we made him ride an extra few miles to call it a full 1000k.

For the 2005 version of the GRR, Tobin may be closer, or just beyond 1000k in length. We don't have the exact distances down yet because we still have to go out and measure some of small route changes we've made.

To answer the other part of your question, the 200k portion starts as soon as you decide to leave the Tobin control. Thus, you can have some 'rest' time between finishing the 1000k portion and starting the 200k portion...as long as you are not butting up against the 75 hour 1000k time limit when you reach Tobin. Thus, you have essentially 88.5 hours of riding time to complete the 1000k+200k. All we ask is that you don't make any volunteers at Tobin wait hours beyond the closing time of the Tobin control waiting for you to start the 200k.

Bill Bryant or Lois Springsteen may be able to provide some more detail on this topic, and make sure I got it right. Bill, Lois? Any comment?

Is the Tobin control going to be the 'finish' for the 1000k?
If one does the 1000k in 75 hours (or less) when does the
clock start for the 200k back to Davis?

thanks
