Joe:
While I have rode many doubles this also will be my first series of long
rides. As I commute I already have one a topeak rack that mounts to the
seat post and accept paniers. I plan to use a trunk on the rack rather
than paniers. Recently a friend of mine purchased a light trunk setup
from detour. He purchased the expandable version. This setup is much
lighter than what I have and seemed a good choice for a long ride such as
the GRR.
Here is a link to the company site. My friend bought it at REI but I
didn't see it in their on line catalog so they may not carry it any more.

It sounds like I will need to get a camelback. I usually carry two
waterbottles but this sounds like it will not be enough for this ride.
Does anyone have any recommendations on what to look for in a camelback.

Hello Joe!
I did not see responses to your inquiry on the lists, but here's my
skinny:
1. Hydration and nutrition: 100 oz. camelback and two large water bottles.
Meal replacement drinks for 50-60% of total nutritional requirements.
2. Clothing layers: Four (4) layers of clothing above and two (2) layers
below the waist: short sleeve jersey; long sleeve jersey; light wind
breaker; rain coat; bib shorts and long tights.
3. A rear trunk rack to carry clothing, food, tools, etc.
4. Drop bags at Adin and Susanville to contain sleeping clothes, shower
kit,
bib shorts, socks, jersey, meal replacement drinks, batteries, etc. Drop
bag
at Greenville for meal replacement drinks and batteries. etc.
5. Cycle primarily in the aerobic range from 50 to 75%, e.g., maximize use
of body fat stores and minimize fatigue!
6. Sleep 3+ hours at Adin outbound and Susanville inbound. Power-sleep
inbound at Greenville and Oroville, as necessary.
7. Use fenders and 700x28 randonneur tyres.

Subject: Managing clothing, etc on long brevets

Like many on this list, I intend to complete the Davis Gold Rush in
July. Up until today the longest rides I've done are a bunch of
doubles, where I manage my clothing by wearing arm/knee/toe warmers
and a vest during the morning/evening sections. These all stuff nicely
into my jersey pockets during the hot day, but I wouldn't want to wear
them all night since they're not warm enough.
The GRR promises to be hot during the day and cold at night, meaning
that I'll need to warmer layers for night riding. Even though I'll
have drop bags where I can have warmer clothing waiting for me, I'm
not going to make any assumptions about where I'll be when it gets
cold and dark.
In general I'm thinking I'll need the following
Base Layer: Shorts, short sleeve Jersey, defeet wooleator socks, short
finger gloves.
For temps <70 and >55: Arm/knee/toe warmers, vest, thin long fingered
gloves.
Below 50 (especially at night when I don't have the sun warming me) I
need to add a few items like long sleeve jersey layer, a thin
windbreaker jacket, and possibly thicker gloves and full
booties. Along with some supplies and extra food, this won't all fit
in my jersey pockets and under-seat pack.
What kind of solutions do people generally employ for carrying (or not
carrying) the stuff they need on these long events? I have a decent
commuter bike with a Tubus rack and trunk, and also have a CF road
bike that weighs about 10lb less and is much more comfortable.
My question can be broken down as follows

- What do you carry with you on a Brevet (clothing, supplies, etc)

- How do you carry it? (ie: full rack, seat post rack, carradice, etc)

- What do you put in your drop bags.

- Any other logistic tips.

Much of the fun of the Brevets is learning how to work out these
logistics. Looking forward to your suggestions.

Joe
