I don't think I'll take my Gold Rush, probably take the Aero instead. I saw
a few other recumbent riders on the list.

I saw Ron Bobb's name on the list I believe. While he
isn't GPC, he is an old friend of Don's and I think once
did the GPC ITT.

Sorry for the content of the post on recumbent riders. I wrote
that thinking the posting had come from by local club's email
list, the Grizzly Peak Cyclists. That said, Ron Bobb's name
is on the list for the GRR, and he does ride recumbent.

On another note, I liked seeing the listing of pre-signed riders
for the GRR put up on the web. I'm interested in knowing
where most riders will be coming from. I noticed a few names
of riders I know to live outside of California.

Submitted for your interest:

This might not be news for the GRR organizers, but I
got word from a friend and fellow prospective GRR
participant about the Davis Creek Store near the
turnaround.

Always nice to have lots of support on brevets, and it
sounds like these folk -- friends of Sydney's -- are
happy to help us on the ride.

Thanks.
Sterling

Hi Sterling
Forgot to mention that the Davis Creek store (on the
Gold Rush Randonee route, on Hwy 395 near Goose Lake)
has new proprietors...Erika Forrest and her boyfriend
John. Erika (Neneeka) used to work here at the Modoc
NF, and
her mom Margaret still does. They are just starting
out with the store and a small deli. The store has
always been a hub for the local community, but there's
now a newer recreational crowd; Sugar Hill (nearby) is
a summer hang gliding destination, and there are lots
more RVs on the road these
days. When I heard they bought the store, I printed
off the Gold Rush ride information so I imagine
they'll plan on being open and prepared, at least I
hope so.

Thanks Sterling--
FWIW, I worked the 600k checkpoint at Davis Creek during the inaugural GRR
four years ago and the store staff couldn't have been more helpful. Great
folks, and I'm glad to hear Margaret still works there. Along with providing
the riders with food and drink, she arranged for us to use the old church
site for our control, gave as an overflow option for sleeping, etc. She and
the store staff were genuinely interested in the welfare and progress of the
riders (and a little bit incredulous too.) ;-)

Cheers,
Bill Bryant

FWIW, I rode the inaugural GRR four years ago, and I'm certain I
passed the store, but don't remember the details. Actually about all I
remember of the 600k turnaround was Bill Bryant's happy face and a
volunteer who's name I'm sorry I can't remember. Who stands out because
he held our tandem the entire time we were at the stop (there wasn't a
good place to lean it, without risking scratching up something that
wasn't ours) Lastly I remember the pack of dogs that swirled around the
bike at one point on the way back to Alturus, so close to us I stepped
one to the ground under a pedal.

Many other things stand out from the GRR too, like the cold at
Eagle Lake, but I'll save most of those for later....

Gosh that was a great ride!

site for our control, gave as an overflow option for sleeping, etc. She
and
the store staff were genuinely interested in the welfare and progress of
the
riders (and a little bit incredulous too.) ;-)

Cheers,
Bill Bryant

Hi Peter--
Great to hear from one of the past GRR finishers. The hard-working folks
running the Davis Creek control were Dean & Sandy Goodfellow. I understand
they've re-upped for another tour of duty this summer. :-)

Man, those dammed dogs gave us fits for a couple of hours when you went
through on Wednesday morning-- they were on an Indian reservation and the
local county sheriff couldn't/wouldn't help us out too much due to
reservation jurisdictions issues. After they went home, he suggested I just
shoot them if they caused any further problems-- but I had foolishly left my
guns at home during the randonnee. ;-)
Seriously, no one got bit in 2001, only scared.

Anyhoo, I've got this crazy idea that this year I'd like to try to be a
rider and so might be on the other end of their hospitality-- the
Goodfellows, not the dogs. But if the qualifiers don't go according to plan,
I'll be out there helping somewhere along the route too. Despite the hours
of work, it was a lot of fun overall. Plus, I got to travel to a neat part
of the state for some scenic travel.

Just a quick note to introduce myself to the list and to say I am=20
looking forward to doing the ride. This will be my second mountain=20

it will be interesting to see how GRR compares to the other 1200s I've=20

Hi Phil--
Nice to hear from you, and welcome aboard. I've enjoyed your ride reports o=
n
the Randonneurs Ontario web site for years. Four years ago we had Ken Dobb
from Ontario do the ride and he finished in fine fashion, Michael Lau too.
They are at opposite ends of the speed spectrum, so perhaps you can talk to
each of them to get their various perspectives before you travel west.

Here in northern California, it seems spring has sprung. Davis had its 200k
brevet last Saturday and it was a big success. Nice day, friendly riders
(about 85-90, very few DNFs), no serious problems that I heard about. San
Francisco has already started its series and Santa Rosa kicks theirs off
this Saturday. All in all, a good start to the qualifying campaign for many
regional randonneurs and randonneuses. From my vantage here at RUSA HQ, I
sense there is a good amount of interest for the GRR around the nation.

FWIW, I was doing some recon work on the GRR route a few weeks back. The
Davis 400k on May 7th will take in the first 110 miles of the GRR route. It
has the most of the turns and will be ridden at night on the GRR, so seeing
it in daylight during the 400k should be a help.

Anyhoo, the big news was that bumpy Cranmore Road along the Sacramento Rive=
r
levee has had many of the potholes filled in. Four years ago this 12-mile
stretch caused some worries, but for 2005 things are definitely improved.
Not a super-smooth surface to be sure, but much better than before. :-)

Looking forward to seeing you and all the others in July,
Bill Bryant
Santa Cruz, California

I've been on the GRR website for a copy of the registration form - does
anyone know if one is available?

I've just finished what is likely me last outing on the skis this past
Sunday (a lovely sunny day at one of my favourite Nordic ski places),
and will be going south with a group from my randonneur club to Table
Rock State Park to get in a week of cycling. Hoping for good weather.

Not to step on anyone's toes here, nor is this to imply that I'm a "hoverer:"

I just noticed that the reg forms for the GRR are on the website. In Word
of PDF format. Woo hoo!

Having looked at the web site and the Rider Packet, I'm not sure of the
correct date for the start of the GRR. 7/19/05 seems to be the predominant date
but there are also references to 7/9/05 and a Monday start. What is the
correct starting date?

Hi Glenn--
I suspect there is some 2001 material being recycled when the Monday, 7/9
date is shown on current GRR materials.

The GRR date for 2005 is Tuesday, 7/19=8B with a nice full moon on Thursday,
the 21st for some good night riding. :-)

Cheers,
Bill Bryant

Bill,
I had happily noticed the full moon date! it will be another
beautiful crank up Feather River Canyon under a full moon!
=20
Little road traffic, lots of trains and falling water noises and the
canyon in the ghostly light of the full moon.
=20
I have great memories of that from 2001, hope to repeat it this
year.

Pete

Thanks for the "heads up" - I downloaded the form in both formats - now
all I have to do is get in the training rides.....

Is this route online anywhere? Anyone know the elevation gain
for the course? I'm quite new to these rides so haven't done
them in the past. Thanks in advance.

On the web site it says riders will be limited to 175, while on the
registration forms it says 150 on page 2 under GRR Qualification, and
250 on the actual registration form. I'm assuming it was raised from
175 to 250 and the 150 is a misprint - correct?

Also, I sent in my registration last week. How and when can I expect to
be notified about acceptance?

Thanks,

That's the route for the Santa Cruz 300k. The Santa Rosa 300k goes out to Pt. Reyes. That route is http://home.pacbell.net/donnk/srcc300k.pdf

I don't have an altimeter so I can't tell you about the elevation gain. On both routes, there can be a rather taxing headwind on the way home from the turnaround.

Hi Guys--
Joe, I think perhaps you measured the Pinnacles 300k on April 23rd run by
the Santa Cruz Randonneurs (SCR), but I think Rob is asking about the Santa
Rosa Cycling Club's (SRCC) 300k on this Saturday. Probably the SCR vs SRCC
monikers are too close to avoid confusion. (But thanks for the measurement!)

Anyhoo, FWIW, I don't know the climbing for the SRCC 300k to Pt Reyes, but I
did try to ride it a couple of years ago, but only got about 200k. It was a
tough ride-- not so much from any long climbs, but multiple short ones and
REALLY strong winds along the coast. Ride organizer Donn King said, 'Come
loaded for bear' and he wasn't far off the mark. It was hard. Beautiful
route, so that does take your mind off your suffering (if it is a windy
day). It was pretty neat getting out to Land's End on Pt Reyes for the
turnaround, it felt like we were at the edge of the continent (as indeed we
were.) Anyone who finishes the SRCC 300k is, in my book, a
randonneur/randonneuse with a capital "R". :-)

Maybe if you went to the RUSA web site and used the Officials search tool,
or the Links page by clubs, you could contact RBA Donn King and he'd have an
altitude number for you?

Bonne Route!
Bill Bryant

Hello Joe!
I did not see responses to your inquiry on the lists, but here's my skinny:
1. Hydration and nutrition: 100 oz. camelback and two large water bottles.
Meal replacement drinks for 50-60% of total nutritional requirements.
2. Clothing layers: Four (4) layers of clothing above and two (2) layers
below the waist: short sleeve jersey; long sleeve jersey; light wind
breaker; rain coat; bib shorts and long tights.
3. A rear trunk rack to carry clothing, food, tools, etc.
4. Drop bags at Adin and Susanville to contain sleeping clothes, shower kit,
bib shorts, socks, jersey, meal replacement drinks, batteries, etc. Drop bag
at Greenville for meal replacement drinks and batteries. etc.
5. Cycle primarily in the aerobic range from 50 to 75%, e.g., maximize use
of body fat stores and minimize fatigue!
6. Sleep 3+ hours at Adin outbound and Susanville inbound. Power-sleep
inbound at Greenville and Oroville, as necessary.
7. Use fenders and 700x28 randonneur tyres.

Subject: Managing clothing, etc on long brevets

Like many on this list, I intend to complete the Davis Gold Rush in
July. Up until today the longest rides I've done are a bunch of
doubles, where I manage my clothing by wearing arm/knee/toe warmers
and a vest during the morning/evening sections. These all stuff nicely
into my jersey pockets during the hot day, but I wouldn't want to wear
them all night since they're not warm enough.
The GRR promises to be hot during the day and cold at night, meaning
that I'll need to warmer layers for night riding. Even though I'll
have drop bags where I can have warmer clothing waiting for me, I'm
not going to make any assumptions about where I'll be when it gets
cold and dark.
In general I'm thinking I'll need the following
Base Layer: Shorts, short sleeve Jersey, defeet wooleator socks, short
finger gloves.
For temps <70 and >55: Arm/knee/toe warmers, vest, thin long fingered
gloves.
Below 50 (especially at night when I don't have the sun warming me) I
need to add a few items like long sleeve jersey layer, a thin
windbreaker jacket, and possibly thicker gloves and full
booties. Along with some supplies and extra food, this won't all fit
in my jersey pockets and under-seat pack.
What kind of solutions do people generally employ for carrying (or not
carrying) the stuff they need on these long events? I have a decent
commuter bike with a Tubus rack and trunk, and also have a CF road
bike that weighs about 10lb less and is much more comfortable.
My question can be broken down as follows

- What do you carry with you on a Brevet (clothing, supplies, etc)

- How do you carry it? (ie: full rack, seat post rack, carradice, etc)

- What do you put in your drop bags.

- Any other logistic tips.

Much of the fun of the Brevets is learning how to work out these
logistics. Looking forward to your suggestions.

Joe

Joe:
While I have rode many doubles this also will be my first series of long
rides. As I commute I already have one a topeak rack that mounts to the
seat post and accept paniers. I plan to use a trunk on the rack rather
than paniers. Recently a friend of mine purchased a light trunk setup
from detour. He purchased the expandable version. This setup is much
lighter than what I have and seemed a good choice for a long ride such as
the GRR.
Here is a link to the company site. My friend bought it at REI but I
didn't see it in their on line catalog so they may not carry it any more.

http://detours.us/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=61&osCsid=cfc8358b882078bbed6b7fc035ed94a4

It sounds like I will need to get a camelback. I usually carry two
waterbottles but this sounds like it will not be enough for this ride.
Does anyone have any recommendations on what to look for in a camelback.

I've seen this one in person and it looks perfect. I'm ordering it for
my events as well.

Since my back and neck are going to hurt enough as it is, I'm sticking
with two bottles. I did find some larger bottles that hold 33 oz of
water that work fairly well for me. With two bottles I can hold as
much as I would in my 70oz Camelbak.

If you want a camelback I've been pretty happy with the Classic. It's
got a small zipper pocket good for a phone and wallet and some bungie
cords to hold a jacket.

In reading Jim Bradbury's write up of the 2001 Gold Rush (a great
read I thought) he notes that the use of the camelback complicated
his routines at controls or any time he needed to deal with
clothing changes, etc. Admitting that it is very largely a personal
issue, I myself have lately found that the less on my person,
be it a messenger bag, camelback, or even stuffed pockets, the
better it is for me. As for choice of bag for carrying things,
I'm going with a Carridice Pendle. I don't think the profile
of the Pendle, being wider than 'trunk racks' is an issue, as
it doesn't extend out the sides more than I myself 'extend',
if you know what I mean.

As for water bottles, on the recommendation of my friend Jack Holmgren,
I started using those huge Zefal water bottles and aside from the
minimal leaking when you squeeze to hard and fast when the bottle is
full, they are fine and the extra water (relative to the older,
smaller bottles I used) extends my range on the bike.

Take this all with a grain of salt. I'm a rookie on anything beyond
double centuries.

Another option for water is the Tallac double water bottle holder. At first I didn't care for this product but it's growing on me for longer rides. I used it on Saturday for a 200K and it allowed me to carry 3 bottles on my bike and I never had less then one bottle all day. I carried a 28oz bottle and a 20 oz bottle on the double cage and another 28oz bottle in the other cage. That's nearly the same if not more then a full camelbak. I would much rather do this then have anything on my back. Also, a point a reference, 70oz of water is about 5 pounds of weight and that's not counting the weight of the bag etc.

Joe,
Not certain what sort of climate you usually ride in, but in
2001 the temp at the 6 PM start of the GRR was down to 95 degrees. As I
recall, the finish was equally warm! My tandem partner and I ended up
waiting in Oroville till close to sunset to avoid that heat on the
return!

I'm from a cooler climate, New York on the Canadian border, and
went through a full Camelback within the first 30 miles. In addition to
that I carried two bottles on the bike, one with liquid nutrition, one
with more water. I also used a lot of endurolytes, to keep the
electrolyte levels up. They work for me and can be found at:
http://www.e-caps.com/za/ECP?PAGE=3DPRODUCT&CAT=3DSUPFUELS&PROD.ID=3D4037=
&OMI=3D
&AMI=3D&uir=3Dproduct.category,SUPFUELS,Fuels%20%26%20Supplements

I've used the Zefal bottles and they work fine, and I'll
probably use one or two of them in addition to the Camelback again this
year. To lighten the load, during the cooler stretches I won't fill
everything. An empty bottle doesn't weigh much, and can be left in a
drop bag.

I'd suggest you consider starting with a Camelback, it can
always be dropped at the bag drop, and recovered again on the way back
for the final dash, or not. As I recall, unless the route changes from
2001, there was only about one town between Davis and Oroville, and few
doors to knock on and beg for water. (Someone more knowledgeable please
correct me if I'm wrong.)

I really hate carrying anything on my back, especially in the
heat, but I find the convenience of sucking on the straw and capacity
help keep me hydrated. It's also a great place to pin the cue sheet,
oops, not riding tandem this year, never mind that one!
Running out of water in the first hundred miles of a 1200k and
getting dehydrated is a "Bad Thing" to have happen, and tough or
impossible to recover from! It can really mess up the rest of the ride!

If you do decide to get a Camelback, be certain to use it on
your training rides, just to get used to carrying the extra weight.

Of course, your mileage may vary. If you're a desert rat and can
get by in 110 degree weather with little to drink, don't bother!

Pete

I've seen this one in person and it looks perfect. I'm ordering it for
my events as well.

Since my back and neck are going to hurt enough as it is, I'm sticking
with two bottles. I did find some larger bottles that hold 33 oz of
water that work fairly well for me. With two bottles I can hold as
much as I would in my 70oz Camelbak.

If you want a camelback I've been pretty happy with the Classic. It's
got a small zipper pocket good for a phone and wallet and some bungie
cords to hold a jacket.

That's a good point. According to the posted route, the longest
stretch between water controls is between Davis and Oraville at 101
miles. Carrying a camelback+bottles until the first stop at Oraville
seems like a good idea. I can drop it off at Greenville and then pick
it up on my way back.

Between Greenville the longest stretch between controls is 43 miles
between Adin and Altaras. Seems like that can easily be done on two
big 33oz bottles.

I used a camelback all last year on Doubles but after spending the
last few months commuting to work with bottles I've come to appreciate
not having heavy things on my back. If it promises to be hot I'll
definitely bring the camelback. Getting a little dehydrated on a
"short" ride like a double isn't going to have the same deleterious
effect as getting dehydrated on a longer event such as this.

Needless to say I'll be bringing more than I need to the start so that
if I need any last minute adjustments in plans I won't be stranded.

Thanks for the discussion. I think this is extremely helpful.

I used a Camelbak Rocket on the Davis 300K and didn't feel much effect from the wind. I carry HEED in the Rocket and Perpetuem in the bottles to keep fueled and hydrated on longer rides. Also used to the Rocket since doing long rides in NV usually means limited services and I hate to see buzzards circling.

It sounds like I will need to get a camelback. I usually carry two waterbottles but this sounds like it will not be enough for this ride. Does anyone have any recommendations on what to look for in a camelback.

Joe

Up until today the longest rides I've done are a bunch of
doubles, where I manage my clothing by wearing arm/knee/toe warmers
and a vest during the morning/evening sections. These all stuff nicely
into my jersey pockets during the hot day, but I wouldn't want to wear
them all night since they're not warm enough.
The GRR promises to be hot during the day and cold at night, meaning
that I'll need to warmer layers for night riding. broken down as follows

- What do you carry with you on a Brevet (clothing, supplies, etc)

- How do you carry it? (ie: full rack, seat post rack, carradice, etc)

- What do you put in your drop bags.

- Any other logistic tips.

Much of the fun of the Brevets is learning how to work out these
logistics. Long Distance Gang-

I've done a few long distance cycling events, including 1200K events. I
typically carry two water bottles, and on the last GRR sent two drop bags
ahead. Each fit in a mailing envelope. I ended up using very little
from the drop bags anyway.

Keep drinking, as dehydration involves a lengthy and debilitating
recovery period. Water will be available relatively easily. Bring a
credit card for emergencies (it's light, it works well in California, and
it can buy you what you need rather than what you planned on).

I carried a Camelbak at the last PBP. I never put any water in it. Oh
well.

Of course, YMMV.

Regards,
